Manchester City blew the January transfer window wide open last night when they launched a world-record bid of €100 million (£91 million) for Kaká, the AC Milan forward.

Officials from the Barclays Premier League club met their counterparts from the Serie A team in Milan yesterday and, according to reports, were armed with a salary offer from Sheikh Mansour, their billionaire owner from Abu Dhabi, that would result in the 2007 Fifa World Player of the Year earning £13.6 million a year after tax.

On a day of frantic transfer activity, Harry Redknapp, the Tottenham Hotspur manager, was also spotted at the San Siro watching Adriano, Inter Milan’s out-of-favour striker, in a 3-1 Coppa Italia victory over Genoa.

Tottenham are prepared to offer Gareth Bale as part of any deal, which could pave the way for Inter to let Adriano go and allow them to pursue their interest in signing Carlos Tévez, the Argentina forward, from Manchester United.

Garry Cook, the City chief executive, met Ariedo Braida, the Milan sporting director, and Adriano Galliani, the Italian club’s executive vicepresident, to discuss the offer for Kaká. Two agents were also present: Ernesto Bronzetti, who advises Milan on transfer activity, and Kia Joorabchian, who has strong links with Brazilian players and acted on behalf of City in the deals that brought Robinho — a British-record signing at £34.2 million — and Jô to the City of Manchester Stadium last summer. Kaká’s agent, Gaetano Paolillo, and the player’s father, who is involved in his son’s business affairs, were not present.

Milan tried to explain the arrival of the City delegation by saying they were there to discuss Dida, the 35-year-old Brazil goalkeeper, but it is unlikely that it would take the top brass of both clubs to discuss the transfer of an ageing reserve. Silvio Berlusconi, the Milan owner, said: “I don’t know anything about any offer, but I do hope Kaká is not for sale and that he stays.”

Unlike Juventus, who parted with Zinédine Zidane for a world-record fee of £48 million in 2001, Milan have never sold any of their star players while still in their prime. Moving Kaká, 26, would be quite a departure and a blow to the ego of Berlusconi, Italy’s Prime Minister and one of the wealthiest men in Europe. However, when faced with Sheikh Mansour’s chequebook and an offer that would just about cover Milan’s wage bill for an entire season, even an ego as big as Berlusconi’s might be ready to concede.

Inter, meanwhile, have offered Tottenham the opportunity to sign Adriano, with Bale, the Wales left back, going the other way in part-exchange. The 26-year-old Brazil striker’s career has been in decline after a blistering spell in which he was arguably the world’s best centre forward.

Adriano has battled against depression, injuries and drink in recent times and in the latter half of last year he was loaned back to São Paulo. This season, under José Mourinho, he has made only seven appearances in Serie A, scoring one goal.

Bale, 19, is believed to have caught Mourinho’s eye during the Portuguese manager’s time at Chelsea. He has featured 12 times for Tottenham this season since recovering from an ankle ligament injury. Selling Adriano and cutting his £5 million-a-year salary from the Inter wage bill would enable Mourinho to pursue a deal for Tévez.

The Brazilian defender is aware that his time in Germany is up, and he is now looking for a new challenge in his career.

Lucio joined Bayern Munich from the fellow Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen in 2004, where he spent three seasons at. Since this time, the Brazilian has gone on to become one of the best defenders in the competition, and he is the current vice-captain of the successful German outfit.

Despite this however, the 30-year-old’s time at the club is nearing an end, as the Bavarians seem unwilling to discuss the future of his contract with him.

With this in mind, the World Champion of 2002 has declared that he would like to move elsewhere, with the hope of challenging himself further in his illustrious career.

“I had five fantastic years in Munich, but now I want to find a club that’s even more significant, because I still have so much time to experience new things in my career,” Lucio declared in an interview, as reported by Tuttomercatoweb.

“My contract expires here in 2010, and the club are yet to discuss any form of extension, so I think that I could leave on a mutual agreement, he added.

“I have tried to speak with the likes of AC Milan and Real Madrid in the past, but that was a while ago, so maybe they may be interested this time around,” he optimistically concluded.

Bayern have an already made replacement for Lucio, with that being the 19-year-old Brazilian defender Breno, who joined the club in December 2007 from Sao Paulo in Brazil.

On-loan AC Milan midfielder David Beckham has made his competitive Serie A debut for the club against Roma.

Beckham played 89 minutes in the Olympic Stadium before he was replaced by Mathieu Flamini as Milan drew 2-2.
The England international had been expected to start on the bench, but Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti played him on the right of a three-man midfield.

Beckham had not played a competitive game since the end of the MLS season with Los Angeles Galaxy in October.
He said: “I found out I was going to start before the game during the team meeting.

“I was very happy that the manager kept me on for as long as he did because it is important for me to get match fitness and, to be honest, I felt better than I thought I would feel.

“I was surprised to have started the game but I am happy. Playing out there is what I love doing and I enjoyed it.
“I didn’t think I would last that long but I felt so good. At half-time I felt really strong. I think the manager saw that I felt good, that I still had energy and he kept me on.

“Now I just hope to start some more games, but I will take one step at a time.”

Ancelotti said Beckham had been rewarded for his commitment in training.

“I decided to start with Beckham because he had demonstrated over the last few days that he was intelligent, serious and committed,” said the Italian.

“This was his reward for settling in so quickly. I will never tire of pointing out that he is an exemplary professional who works hard.”

Mirko Vucinic put Roma ahead midway through the first half with his third goal in three games against Milan when he blasted home.

Just after the interval Alexandre Pato equalised when he tapped in Kaka’s cross and the 19-year-old Brazilian striker soon clipped in a superb second.

Montenegro striker Vucinic again netted with a diving header on 72 minutes to secure Roma a point.

Beckham’s stint with the Italian club ends in March, when the Major League Soccer season resumes, but it has been suggested that he may be tempted to extend his stay at Milan if his spell goes well.

The midfielder added after the match: “The contract and the agreement is that I go back to LA on March 8th or 9th so I’m going to enjoy it up to then and we’ll see.

“It is great to play at this club and to be out there with some great players.

“I’m enjoying being part of this team and training with these players but I will take it one step at a time.
“It’s pretty amazing to be among some of those players and I’m glad to just give them the ball and they’ll deliver.”

One of the reasons Beckham moved to Italy was to help him maintain his fitness as he seeks to prolong his international career.

England next play in a friendly against Spain on 11 February. If selected, Beckham would equal Bobby Moore’s outfield record of 108 caps.
